New vs Old Immigrants.

What is meant by the label, 'New Immigrant'? Who are they? Do they differ from one another? How? Do they include refugees? Give some examples of New Immigrants. How are they different from the 'Old Immigrant'? Discuss three main differences between the New and the Old immigrant. Are the New Immigrants expected to fare better or worse? Why?

One of the main factors that helps explain the differences in outcomes among new immigrants, is the mode of incorporation. Explain the role of the mode of incorporation in the life of the average new immigrant . How much of a difference is it expected to make? Is the difference greater or smaller if the new immigrant is racialized in the U.S. ? Give an example.

The New immigrant is said to face a very nuanced set of challenges. Some theorists expect them to do 'as good' as the earlier immigrant. Other theorists believe that a significant proportion of new immigrants will be trapped in a permanent underclass. Which do you believe? Use your textbook to support your answer.
