Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek mathematician, geographer, astronomer etc.
(many of those).
He was chief librarian in Library of Alexandria.
He invented geography as the discipline and is most known for quite accurate calculation of the Earth's circumference.
Christopher Columbus is said to have read Eratosthenes'es calculations but didn't believe the Earth was so big, hence he mistook New World for Asia.
