**Deflection of Beams**

For the system of beams shown, solve the following.

Part Investigate the contact between a simply supported beam and a cantilever beam. The free end of the cantilever beam is at the midpoint of the simply supported beam. Each beam is 20 inches long, and has a cross section of 2 inches wide and 0.5 inches high. The beams are made of steel (E=30E6 psi, u = 0.33). The beams are spaced apart by a distance of 0.125 inches. Determine the load to just make contact (use hand calculations). Once this load is determined, apply a load of 4 times the initial contact load and determine the force distribution in the beam and contact area.

Part Investigate the contact between a simply tensile members. Each link is 20 inches long, and has a round cross section with a diameter of 2 inches. The beams are made of steel (E=30E6 psi, u = 0.33). The beams are spaced apart by a distance of 0. 25 inches. Determine the load to just make contact (use hand calculations). Once this load is determined, apply a load of 3 times the initial contact load and determine the force distribution in the beam and contact area.
