Lydia bought a shirt at 20% off its retail price of $40.

She paid 5% tax on the price after the discount.
How much did Lydia pay for the shirt?

Answer

To find 20% of 40, just convert 20% to a decimal, which would be 0.20.
0.20 * 40 = 8.
So since she is getting 20% off, subtract 40 from 8 to get $32.
To find 5% of $32, convert it to a decimal, by moving the decimal point two places to the left, like I did before, and multiply it by 32.
This would get you $1.60 I would add this because she paid 5% tax so this is apart of her total.
$32 + $1.60 = $33.60
