Why are Henri Rousseaus paintings seen as imaginative and extraordinary

Why are Henri Rousseaus paintings seen as imaginative and extraordinary

Answer

His paintings have received both praise and criticism for his childlike style and subject matter, which is made complicated by the fact that they are also painted with a high level of skill and maturity of technique.
The scenes are somewhat fantastical, images that seem to be straight from his imagination - jungles, people riding tigers etc. there also seems to be great depth to the forest setting, which adds another element of mystery his paintings defied usual artistic convention.
Picasso was a big fan, as he himself worked towards a more childlike approach to art, which he appreciated as a quality in Rousseaus work
