In the movie Mr. Holland opus As a teacher, Mr. Holland invests his time and efforts in his students, but isn't always there for his family, particularly his son.

For those who work with youth, how do youth, how you balance the needs of the many youth who all need you

Answer

Schedules work wonders.
If you put set times to work on work, and leave the rest for family, you have time for everyone who needs you.
If, as a teacher, you find yourself spending more time grading homework at home than you do spending time with your family, it's time to prioritize or find new ways to get homework to students and graded.
There are plenty of websites out there that will grade things for you.
Noredink is a wonderful site for essays to be put in.
It checks grammar and punctuation as well as watching for plagiarism.
Oftentimes, students get more homework than they need, as well.
Don't assign more homework than you would want to do.
Remember, all the homework the students do, the teacher has to grade.
That's not to say one should be lazy, it just means maybe one should employ other teaching aides, rather than rely on just homework.
I've found that food and games work well, especially in classes that don't have a whole lot of sites devoted to grading assignments.
For example, in a history class, one can have a day where students bring in food relative to the era being studied.
In a math class, play a fairly well-known board game, but creatively tie it into what is being taught.
If you can get more of the teaching done in the classroom, and done effectively, you can have more time to spend with your family.
And if you still are spending more time helping students, maybe it's time to find a tutor for some of them.
